Great book, i still think it was a huge mistake on Lucas part to sell Pixar.

Pixar is so superior to the new lucasfilm animation based in singapore, there is just no comparison.

It is also funny because Lucas determined he was not doing animated fims, but the prequels despite the live action have lots of animation in cgi.

I had hoped the story of lucasarts book would be as good, too bad it was not.

That book turned out mostly to be a picture book.

Droidmaker is so well researched  the author deserves thanks and admiration.

The only other book i think that tops droidmaker is rinzler's making of star wars book, or comes close is the old ilm special effects tome.  You know that book that is oversize and cost like a hundred bucks.

To me the ultimate book for fans is the star wars chronicles.  Too bad through all the years i have not been able to find a copy at a reasonable price.

" A special effect without a story is a pretty boring thing" - George Lucas

There is only 1 Star Wars Trilogy.  1977-1983.

I'll add to the kudos. Great book. Puts together all the pieces of how the technology we commonly use today came about. I vaguely remembered seeing the "This image is fake" picture of a couple pool balls hitting each other from 1984. But hadn't thought much about it at the time (being a kid who could barely 'print screen goto 10'), but reading how all these people collaborated to get to create that one image and where we are now, this book puts everything together.

Plus he's a nice guy, he gave a lecture when promoting the book and stuck around to answer questions after. If you can get to see him talk, it's a good time.

Thanks Heilemann for posting the link. And thanks to the author, Micheal Rubin, for being so generous as to post your work online. Now that I am flipping through this thing, I may have to "register my shareware" and get a hard copy. Looks like this, along with Rinzler's book and Zombie's make up quite the library of information surrounding this particular subject.

Loren Carpenter's "Vol Libre"

"I made this film in 1979-80 to accompany a SIGGRAPH paper on how to synthesize fractal geometry with a computer. It is the world's first fractal movie. It utilizes 8-10 different fractal generating algorithms. I used an antialiased version of this software to create the fractal planet in the Genesis Sequence of Star Trek 2, the Wrath of Khan. These frames were computed on a VAX-11/780 at about 20-40 minutes each."
