Comic book movies - who says yes and who says no? — Page 3

Hmm, I just hope Marvel doesn't go overboard with the Wolverine movies like they did the comics.

Here's my take on the whole comic book movie thing: we've just come off a killer year for comic book movies. Some were extremely good (Spider-Man 2, Hellboy), some were fair to middling (Punisher, Blade: Trinity) and then there was Catwoman. The fact of the matter is that comic book movies aren't going away anytime soon.
My attitude on casting is that the best actor should be cast for the job, unknown or name. Ron Perlman OWNED the role of Hellboy, and Wesley Snipes is Blade, brooding seriousness and all. Ben Affleck as Daredevil or Halle Berry as Catwoman? PLEASE! Of course, they weren't exactly helped by lame scripts and bad creative decisions by their respective studios, but Catwoman is supposed to be this unhinged beast of a woman clad head to toe in leather or vinyl; Halle Berry can do unhinged (see Gothika), but she was really let down by the revisions to Catwoman's backstory. Daredevil was a wretched piece of shite that never should have seen the light of day, Affleck or no Affleck. He was wrong for the part, but he was only one problem in a long laundry list of problems for the abomination that is Daredevil.
It boils down to this: if Hollywood wants to do good comic book movies, they should use talent who know what they're doing and take their time, not rush the stuff to market with talent they think will make them money. Anyone can make the safe decision; it's making the right one that breeds success.

Thank you, Gundark Hunter! Nice to know I'm not alone on the Daredevil film.

I'd like to see a movie adaptation of "Firestorm: The Nuclear Man" with Ronald Raymond combining with Professor Martin Stein (not that new kid in the books now) as the main character(s). With today's special effects, that would be a great movie adaptation.

In the original story, Bane freed the inmates from Arkham Asylum to strategically wear Batman down. He had deduced that Bruce Wayne was Batman, and knew he would try to catch all of the inmates rather than try to catch 40 winks. Thus, wearing Batman down without having to exert himself in the process. The only weakness Bane had, was his dependency on the venom. But nevertheless, he was his own boss.

Little late, but as far as the batgirl thing goes, dunno how it works in the comic but in the 1960's tv series she had blond hair, the red hair was a wig built into her mask.

I like Gundark's post as well although I did find maybe one redeeming factor in Daredevil. Okay, maybe not.

As for X3, I want to see the Dark Phoenix saga come to life. I want to see more with Colossus and Iceman. And Cyclops better have a bigger part in this next film.

The only problem I see is that Halle Berry, as part of her negotiations to return to X3, is pushing for a bigger role for Storm. That scares me. She's sunk just about every movie she's headlined for the last couple years since her Oscar win. I think she wants higher billing in X3. Please don't Bryan Singer. Pitch her and get someone else. Kerry Washington? Sanaa Lathan? Anybody. I don't care. Hell, I'll take Rae Dawn Chong if it means keeping the emphasis of the story on Dark Phoenix where it belongs.

Actually, I'd like to see Merrin Dungey (Francie from Alias) take over as Storm. She's an unknown quantity who could really bring some teeth to the role.

She's demanding too much recognition and money and expansion of her role for it to be good for the series. She seems to want the next movie to be all about Storm. But logic (and the ending of X2) seemingly dictates that it be about Jean Grey/Dark Phoenix.

Exactly. I personally found that preachy scene between her and Nighcrawler in the plane to be out of place and forced. It's obvious that she demanded more lines so they just wrote up that little scene to pacify her, pointless as it was.

If Halle Berry is to be replaced at all, they should get an Egyptian girl to play the part. Someone who looks like the character she's playing.

Halle Berry doesn't really look old enough to play storm... In the old cartoon, storm looked to be in her early forties...

BTW, What "preachy scene with nightcrawler" are you talking about? I vaguely remember her telling him something, But I've not seen the movie for a while.

I agree with Darth Chaltab. An older actress, or at least an older LOOKING actress should have played Storm. The funny thing is that Halle's 38 but still looks like she's in her 20s (good aging or plastic surgery?)

And I agree that Halle's getting too big for her britches. Wonder if the spectacular failure of "Catwoman" has knocked her ego down at all...

Aren't they talking about doing a spin-off for Wolverine and a prequel dealing with the origins of Magneto?

Oh my bad, I forgot someone else posted the Wolverine confirmation earlier. Sorry about that!

I heard that Mark Steven Johnson, the man who dragged Daredevil's good name through the mud with his craptacular 2003 film, is working on a Ghostrider movie with Nicholas Cage attached to star as the fire headed hero. After what he did to Daredevil this man should seriously be barred from doing any comic book related films.

And what is up with giving Daredevil's mentor, Stick, to Elektra in this new spin-off? Liberties are inevitable, but this is ridiculous. And what the hell were they thinking casting Jennifer Garner as Elektra?

Not likely. I wish it would have, but it didn't.

I really hope not. Keep it in the X-Men series as a sidestory. Very side story. Any spinoffs and I think the series would wear out its welcome.

Yeah, I think we've had enough of Wolverine's backstory in the last movie.

Even HSX.com (Hollywood Stock Exchange) has made available shares of Magneto for sale as of today in anticipation of a movie being made. I'm not buying them because I don't think it will happen.
