Info: DVNR smearing in GOUT not in the master...? Or is the 1995 release a different master altogether...? — Page 4

You wanted me to post examples of the DVNR-smear on the '97 LD, here are some examples.

Top: US '97SE LD - 4102985 / Bottom: SWE LD (technidisc)

I was wrong about the artifacts I mentioned on the blockade runner-shootout also appearing in the '97 broadcasts, they are not affected by this, take a look at these nasty artifacts.

SWE LD (technidisc) - the first laser blast when the stormtroopers comes through the door

the same frames on the '97SE LD

GOUT is also affected, but not as bad as the '97 LD

and this is how it continues on the '97 LD, I'm actually not sure what caused some of these artifacts, some look like DVNR and some do not. Judge for yourself on this series of frames:

Top: SWE LD (technidisc) / Bottom: '97SE LD -  Black fire...

A series of frames from the SWE LD:

and the same series of frames on the '97SE LD:

Looking at your screencaps... that's no good. I guess that the LD resolution really just makes smearing less visible. :-(

If the LDs simply blur the smearing then I suppose the digital broadcasts are actually better. They must have applied a shoddy amount of DVNR for the 1997 telecine. Ah well.

In any case, watching over all the digital broadcasts, the amount of smearing seems less visible in some than others. The G'Kar really looks awful while the TB and Flunk seem better. In any case, the higher resolution of the broadcasts really is better it simply shows the smearing more.

A really good example (it's in the Reivax, dunno about the LDs) is when C3PO and R2 take off in the escape pod, you can see the stars spinning behind them, and they all leave spiral trails.

Skimmed through the Empire '97 SE LD yesterday which I hadn't seen in a very long time to see if any DVNR was present and unfortunately I can confirm that it was, clearly noticed it on the scenes on Dagobah and Cloud City, the exact same nasty artifact seen on Vader's blade in the GOUT (see here: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Whats-missing-from-GOUT/post/463309/#TopicPost463309) was also present on this transfer. It's quite amazing that they didn't learn from their previous mistake just a few years earlier, but then again DVNR is still going strong albeit in a slightly more sophisticated way.

The difference being that DVNR of the past was a real time process and the DVNR of today is not.

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

What are the frame numbers of those 97 SE LD shots?  I'm wanting to check my Japan 2nd pressing to see how they compare.

Thanks

I don't have the numbers, even if I had I'm not sure if it would be of any help to you, as your Japanese pressing might not correspond with the numbers of the US set. Try to compare against these by visual cues instead. It's when the troopers comes through the door and starts shooting.
