DOOM: knee deep in the edit. (* unfinished project *)

I was recently browsing fanedit.org and noticed that someone had done a fan edit of the movie DOOM. In face it turned out to be a fanedit of a fanedit. - Doom the Posessed, Re-Cut.

So I downloaded it being quite curious but it actually left me disappointed. It was my understanding that they tried to keep a dark tone to the movie and cut down on cheese, but in the end a lot of this was in tact and in fact some of the parts i liked best had been removed. Now i don’t mean to put anynew down but with me as the audience this edit failed in it’s intent.

I started thinking about how to present to movie in an interesting way…Later that day I watched Planet Terror…You can probably see where this is going.

I decided that it might be fun to give doom a bit of a grindhouse treatment and aim for a more budget shlock sort of look and feel.

Ther were also several areas of the film I felt could be improved that faneditors had not touched on, Including the music. I consider myself a fan of Clint Mansell but a lot of the music here is subtle and not very memorable. I’d also planned to add some rock and roll music in places - ie: the token helicopter scene.

So anyway here’s some quick ideas i’ve thought about. I haven’t actually dona any work on this proper, just planning out some ideas and seeing what, if anything, is viable…What do people think? I’d probably tone down anything that’s too distracting…

http://img365.imageshack.us/img365/7739/41768967um8.jpg

To be clear the intent is not so much to make the movie scary - which i WILL be working at, but moreso to create something that’s fun to watch. I’ll gladly add things that seem over the top if it works in terms of entertaining.

At this point I’m just fishing for ideas.

There's another Doom edit - the original one that the one you found is based on - by someone called Scaperat. It's not accessible at the moment though because of their server move.

My outlook on life - we’re all on the Hindenburg anyway…no point fighting over the window seat.

I had some more ideas but I've been out all weekend so no time to test anything. If anyone else has ideas, post 'em here [no matter how cheesy] and i'll post more when i've got some notes and examples...

I think I'm one of the few who actually enjoy the film as is, Although I do see it as flawed. But then It might be fun to view the story in a different way.

I'm all for tying it a bit closer to the games as well, That's one of the things I've looked into, Using more familiar sound effects etc.

I'm working on a test with that Shot above for [Anaglyph] 3d [Red / Cyan glasses]. It's sorta looking good although it may not be a great shot to try cuz the hallway seems a little soft / blurred where it's better to have nice crisp details for that sort of thing, for your eyes to focus on.

I like your ideas - but I don't really don't get into putting down peoples FAN EDITS - Becuase that's what they are FAN EDITS! DOOM

I really enjoyed the other DOOM (Possesed) edit mentioned above just as much as I will probably enjoy yours. There was some interesting things the fan editor of the film did that I enjoyed. Ofcourse everyone is entitled to their own opionions but I still stay clear of coming across as put downs.
If someone wants to be a constructive critic on FAN EDITS that's another story. I understand what your are saying that it may have left you dissapointed but those critics things I reserve for a private messages. I am sure he wouldn;t get mad at you if you emailed him some of your thoughts. It's his fan edit - it's his vision of the way HE wants it. Just like your vision will be the way you want it! See what I am saying?

Anyway's I am sure you didn't mean it like it comes across above.

I can't wait for yours to be realized, The idea looks awesome. I am impressed!

Thanks

Remember, Highlander, you’ve both still got your full measure of life. Use it well, and your future will be glorious.

Yes, As I said It's not my intent to put anyone down, or their work. And I apologize if it comes accross that way.

It was, In fact my disappointment with the previous efforts to improve upon the movie that inspired me to try a completely different approach.

I've been thinking about splitting the film into 3 acts. Moving the Main titles forward into the intro sequence - In the darkness of the vent shaft...

I was hoping to use throwbacks to the games like "knee deep in the dead" for the act titles, But I cannot as of yet think of anything appropriate for the first act. Wherein the marines go to mars and assess the situation.

I wanna mock up some quick title cards and check the film to see if the idea will be viable...Any suggestions would be great.

How about "Don't fear the Reaper" for one of the title act cards?

Sounds good, Although I don't really want something about death and destruction for the first act - cuz not much has really happeed yet.

I'm considering maybe using "Knee deep in the dead" for act 2 and "Thy flesh consumed" for act 3.

* I might try find a place for "Don't fear the reaper" - the song. I may also use that as the third act title...

Keep the suggestions coming. I'll try post some more ideas soon and see how this idea is shaping up.

I will just be doing a few bits here and there for novelty value, there's no way I could do the entire FPS sequence - and it would be a bit of a waste since a lot of the back gorunds there are smooth / blurry. Makes it hard for your eyes to focus and see the '3d'.

I've been planning on redoing / extending the end sequence of the film to be more akin to the original games [remember the bunny head on a spike, anyone?]

What I'm planning atm is to have the Elevator surface only to reveal that a few zombies are roaming around on the surface.

After that I'm planning a short montage of destruction culling footage form about 5 different movies...finally to reveal a title card saying something like

"Doom2 : Hell on earth.

Coming soon."

Here's a quick mockup I did as a test for a few things..It's not really representative of the edit but this shot may wind up in the montage - it's form 'the reaping'...

As long as I have time to play around in the next few days, more test shots will follow.

Still toying with ideas. I really tried to keep the classic doom logo but I just don't think i can make it work, In the end I decided to try create a bit more of a retro looking title.

I've done a bit of screwing around so I might look at doing the full intro sequence once I've got a bit of free time.

OKAY, HERE'S THE SKINNY ON THE ORIGINAL EDIT.  IT WAS ONE OF SCAPERAT'S FIRST EDITS, AND BECAUSE OF THAT THE CUTS WERE ROUGH.  BOON TOOK IT UPON HIMSELF TO SMOOTH OUT THE ROUGH CUTS. I BELIEVE THAT HE DID THE BEST WITH WHAT HE WAS WORKING WITH.  HE SOLELY WENT BY SCAPERAT'S FRAME WORK.  SCAPERAT'S DOOM EDIT WASN'T THE BEST, BUT IT WAS ONE OF HIS FIRST EDITS AS I STATED BEFORE.  HE HAS ACTUALLY GOTTEN A LOT BETTER.  IN FACT, I'VE ENJOYED A LOT OF HIS LATER EDITS.  WE ALL HAVE TO START SOMEWHERE.

OKAY, NOW TO MY OPINION ON THIS BEING MADE.  I THINK THAT JOHNNY COULD PULL OFF A REALLY FUN EDIT OUT OF THIS.  I LIKE SEEING ORIGINAL IDEAS, AND THIS COULD VERY WELL BE ONE OF THEM.  THE GRIND HOUSE STYLE OF EDIT WOULD REALLY WORK WITH ALL THE CHEESE THAT IS ALREADY PRESENT IN THE MOVIE NOT TO MENTION ALL OF THE OVER THE TOP DIALOGUE AND ACTION SCENES.  THE MUSIC SHOULD BE A COMBINATION OF ROCK AND SCORE.  I WOULD URGE JOHNNY TO USE SCORES FROM THE HAMMER HORROR MOVIES ALONG WITH METAL FROM THE SEVENTIES ie:  K.I.S.S., ALICE COOPER, ETC.

Thanx for the info Dayv. And yeah just to clarify once again - I'm not trying to make something better, merely something different.

If anyone has suggestions on things like song choices I'll be glad to consider them. I've just been taking notes and testing some ideas so far and I'd like to get it at least mostly planned out on paper before i begin proper. I am also hoping to do a few scenes in 3d scattered throughout the film. So I want my ideas tight before I bother since it's a very lengthy process.

Okay I've sat down with some ideas and here is what I have so far.

"Doom: The movie"

I hadn't really planned anything yet but I'd like to have a coming attractions segment at the beginning to help set the mood. [Like Machete to Planet Terror.]

These could either be fake trailers ala Machete or possibly trailers for other fanedits, If other editors would be interested in that sort of thing. It depends on variables like how long it would take to do this project.

At present I've got the movie [in my head] split into 3 main acts as well as an alternate intro and an extended outro. Basically it would flow like this.

A new sequence for 'Universal Pictures Presents' and the title of the film – which I'm simply calling Doom: The movie. I couldn't think of a sub title that didn't sound lame. These animated title shots would be intercut with various shots [most likey close ups of hands and what not] of the Stahl / C24 experiment.

After the titles will be the main intro sequence [with grindhouse style artefacts] ending with Dr. Carmack sending his transmission and the Door to the room bashed in. The shots at the end would be slightly re-arranged since i felt they lingered on the open door a bit too long and all the shots of Carmack turning around got a bit much. After the door is punched in we see him stare at the opening in horror and then we quickly pull back. Cutting to the latter part of the original “universal” sequence, but in reverse.

Act I : Knee deep in the dead.

This part is basically the marines heading to Mars and discovering just what is going on.

Act II : Thy flesh consumed

This is literally the part where all hell breaks loose. Most of the main characters are killed off during act two.

Act III : Inferno

The third act would pick up with Reaper waking alone after Sam injected him with C24. Pretty much from that point up to the two of them riding the Lift to the surface. Fade to white.

The outro idea that I'm tinkering with is to have “THE END” show up onscreen at this point but then blasted to bits by simulated gunfire, Like in the original game. This would be followed by a composition shot of the doors of the surface lift opening [from earlier in the film.] and footage of zombies roaming about.

This all depends on how well I can get this to look.

I'm also looking at other ideas explered in Planet terror like the film image becoming more and more distressed as something bad is about to hapen, usually the death of a main character.

I've got plenty of other ideas but that's mainly the flow I'm aiming for.

Okay, So i was tinkering with the various fonts I've acquired and there were two stand outs that I really liked. Although I wasn't quite getting the right flavour with either so I was toying with using both. I did a few tests to see how it would look throughout the film. Here's a few quick mockups - I'd probably add a few filters to make them look more detailed. maybe add a sheen to one of them...I'm not entirely sold on this style but I'm calling it 'Plan A' :)

I'll most likely stick with a nice simple font like NewsGothic for subtitles and general information. At this point I will probably go with burnt in subtitles. But I haven't decided for sure.

I'm toying with an idea of a simple 2D animation for the intro / title sequence. Sort of in the style of the Venture Bros. Cartoon opening.

After i've sorted those ideas I'll take a serious look at what I want to actually edit with the film. I've got some ideas already but it depends on what I can get away with really.

is the 2D animation going to be from the original game?

no. More in the style of these...

If i remember correctly, there's an extended version of the 3d scene among the extras of the oficial release. I haven't seen it, but it sounds interesting
