Crazy idea- petition White House to get OT released

So, the White House accepts petitions from citizens on pretty much any topic:

https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/

When a submitted petition receives 25,000 signatures, the White House will assess it and give their response.  I'm sure many of you have heard about the petition to build a Death Star:

http://cosmiclog.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/12/13/15889626-its-a-trap-petition-to-build-death-star-will-spark-white-house-response?lite

What if we submitted a petition to get the OT released?

Obviously, the US government would have no actual power or authority to force Disney/Lucasfilm to release the OT... but my thought is, if we could get the 25K signatures, and get the White House to RESPOND to this petition and say, "sorry, no," it at least becomes a news story, and maybe it catches the eye of Disney and whoever else and they start to realize how much people care.  Maybe it would get the ball rolling on a proper release.

Interesting idea, but I think it would make us look like a bunch of crackpots.  Didn't Yahoo just run a story on the silliest petitions to the white house?

"Close the blast doors!"

This could work I mean the Death Star got 34,400+ signers in only 3 months and the government responded. And it would be all over the news that we want the Original 1977, 1980, 1983 Star Wars trilogy in H.D.

The thing about not building the Death Star is even on the Starwas.com blog, so if we make a peition on the whitehouse website maybe we might be know for wanting the originals?

That's an excellent point, pat man.

It's not cheap to do this, (it cost about $4700 in 1996) but it's not impossible if we all chipped in a couple bucks...

$4,700/issue or $4,700 for several issues?

IIRC, it was a one day ad.

OK, so how do we begin?

Do you think OT.com has 5,000 or so users willing to donate $1?

Can we leverage Kickstarter?

Someone first has to design a eye catching ad. (Black and white ads are cheaper in print though.) One that doesn't violate any Lucas or Disney trademarks. This can be used wherever it eventually ends up.

Good point. Not violating trademarks will be incredibly difficult.

How can we mention Star Wars without mentioning Star Wars? :-/

Yeah, it's being abused by loonies, and degenerating into joke fodder.

The most recent example is a petition to get CNN host Piers Morgan deported.

As long as they don't send home back here that's fine by me.

Stephen Fry defined Countryside as To Kill Piers Morgan.

What if we ran a full page ad with a standard black and white star field background, with yellow text.

Have it read:

"American works of art belong to the American public; they are part of our cultural history... In the future it will become even easier for old negatives to become lost and be "replaced" by new altered negatives. This would be a great loss to our society. Our cultural history must not be allowed to be rewritten."

--George Lucas, 1988

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won't last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the [Special Edition] version."

--George Lucas, 1997

THE FANS WANT THE ORIGINALS

"(In the future) theres going to be no more digital enhancements or digital additions to anything based on any film I direct. Im not going to do any corrections digitally to even wires that show...I think letting movies exist in the era, with all the flaws and all of the flourishes, is a wonderful way to mark time and mark history."

--Stephen Spielberg, 2011, Ain't It Cool

"I would have to answer that officially, it's never going to happen...  obviously, I have my own personal feelings, I hope (George Lucas) does (release the original unaltered trilogy)."

--Rick McCallum, 2012, Collider

JOIN THE CAUSE! Bring the Original, Unaltered Trilogy to Blu-Ray!

Throw  a couple more quotes in there from people connected to the Franchise and I think we've gout ourselves an ad :)

I'm actually all for this - I'd kick in at least a $20. Should we start a seperate thread? I was almost thinking it should be moved to General Star Wars discussion, because fewer people come to this part of the forums.

Simple but effective. Might want to move this over to the General SW forum, it will get more attention there. I'd be interested provided we actually find out how much that costs these days.

I'd be willing to contribute a good amount of money as well.

Yes, please create a new thread in the General Star Wars Discussion sub-forum.

Let's make this happen!
