Apparently, when Warner took 2001 from MGM, they also "inherited" MGM's unsold stock of DVDs ... and either before or after the first run of their DVD pressings, Warner put all the old MGM stock into their new packages for sale. So, look at the disc before you buy based on the box.

Zoom-in at eBay and look at the 1998 disc's MGM logo in the 1999 Warner package. Ouch. Class-action law-suit anyone?
The true Warner 1999 DVD disc has the "WB" logo and this picture for it's background photo:
