Brash's Star Wars Sound Effects Archive - A collection of the best Star Wars sounds for use in Fan Editing

Well I'm in the process of assembling all the sounds I've gathered over the last couple of years. This won't include all sounds from all sources as some (even ones specifically targeted for use in fan films) have proved to be awful and are just movie grabs with music and everything.

Included will be sounds from:

  1. The Official Star Wars Soundboards - Will be updated as and when new soundboards are released.
  2. The 'Sounds of Star Wars' Book
  3. Various computer games - Both sound effects and suitable dialogue e.g. for use with redubbing troopers and masked characters.
  4. The radio drama - lots of Threepio dialogue there, for example.
  5. The promotional answerphone messages from 1979/80 - Vader and Threepio dialogue.
  6. AT&T's Star Wars ringtones - Kindly provided by and used with permission from doubleofive.
  7. Various other websites.

I'm trying to make this a definitive archive, containing the highest quality "everyday" Star Wars sound effects, and also some rare ones that were only available from one source and may have a "niche" appeal, but may still be invaluable to some (especially radical) editors

All sounds will be in .wav format. I find this to have a good balance between high quality and flexibility in terms of being accepted by editing programs across different platforms.

I won't be including any of the resources in their entirety - e.g. the radio drama. Just in case people are concerned about issues of copyright. Also, any help I've received from ot.com members in obtaining these sounds will be acknowledged.

If anyone has any ideas or can point me in the direction of any other good sound sources I may have left out, post away.

Resources I've already located/extracted/ripped:

  1. The 1995 Entertainment Utility
  2. The official Star Wars soundboards
  3. The Sounds of Star Wars book
  4. KOTOR 1&2
  5. Empire at war
  6. Some sounds from JK2 - but have since wiped my hdd and no longer have them all

Resources I own, but have yet to extract sounds from

  1. TPM video Game
  2. Episode 1: The insider's guide
  3. Behind the magic
  4. All the Jedi Knight games
  5. X-Wing Alliance

Resources I've yet to get my hands on or know whether they'd be suitable

  1. Force commander
  2. Republic Commando
  3. Too many Star Wars games to build a complete list. lol

If anyone can suggest any more suitable sounds I have have omitted, feel free to post.

Rather than including everything in one compressed file, I'm going to upload each different bundle seperately so that people have the flexibility of only grabbing what they want. I also won't just be linking to the originals as there's nothing worse than finding what you want on a forum, and following a link to something that's been taken down by the original uploaders. I'll be uploading to megaupload or something. One bundle (probably the one the least people have got to listen to) is being uploaded tonight after I painstakingly type out a track list. What kind of disclaimer should I put in the accompanying text document?

State that the effects are not for profit, and are to only be used for Star Wars fan edits and fan films in which the creator is also gaining no profit.

Uploading to megaupload right now. I need somewhere more permanent to host it and wondered if anyone knew of somewhere cheap/free.

It'll do for the timebeing though.

*twiddles thumbs*

EDIT: See first post for my first upload. Hope people like it.

Have just updated my first post to include the official soundboards. All in the relevant folders and converted to .wav to save people the trouble if they don't want to save, arrange, rename and convert the files themselves.

Both my uploads so far have been at 44.1Khz, 16 bit Stereo.

Can any audio/editing gurus tell me if it's worthwhile redoing them at 48Khz, 24 bit?

If you could look into this brash, that would be awsome.

The video game Star Wars Republic commando comes with an amazing amount of sound effects. I used a ton in the Reign of the Darkside work. But since updating to windows 7, I cant install the program used to get the sound files. Which leaves me totaly screwed since I restarted work on it after my Hard drive crash a few months ago.

Directions on how to extract sound files from the game are posted on this page about half way down. If this is something you'd be interested in.

The amount of odd sound effects (like ships and background noise) is staggering.

Thankyou, bobgargia! I've been looking into whether the sound rips for that game are somewhere on the net already. Unfortunately, no luck. There are a lot of music game rips over at ffshrine, so it's likely they'll have extracted sounds as well.

I'll have to ask around! Eventually I hope to have all the game sounds. Thanks for the link! :-)

Its a pain tho to get the sounds cause you have to extract them one by one. Just a heads up.

So unless someone was really dedicated, a complete download of just the sounds is highly unlikely

I had no problem extracting them all together by extracting the folder itself.

What is more of a problem for me is that the sounds aren't labeled.

RE: Brash's Star Wars Sound Effects Archive - A collection of the best Star Wars sounds for use in Fan Editing

I'm sure someone will have devised a way to automate the process somewhat. If you look over at ffshrine, there are guys there who extract game music (some of which happen to be unreleased cues) in order to build more complete Soundtracks than the official so called 'complete' collections. It's those kind of guys who will have devised ways to streamline the process I imagine.

If not, I have patience. I've actually been thinking of buying republic commando on Steam for some time but not got round to it yet.

Wasn't there more Darth Maul dialogue in the TPM game?

Seeing as he doesn't say much any extra may come in handy.

I actually own the TPM game :-)

It really is awful.

I plan to extract all the sounds from it...when I find it.

Also, no matter how many guides i follow, I can't extract all the sounds from 'Behind the Magic' into a playable format.

I have the TPM game on the PSONE but you can't crack into it from that disc (I think).

I used to have the Republic Commando game, but then my brother in law borrowed, and it's never been seen again.

Brash, have you looked into the "Star Wars Trilogy CD-ROM Limited Edition Entertainment Utility" released in 1995? It has lots of clean effects and dialog. I have it if you need it.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

RE: Brash's Star Wars Sound Effects Archive - A collection of the best Star Wars sounds for use in Fan Editing

Already got it, Erik. :-) Though the sound quality on those is pretty bad....I'll probably end up including it though if some of the sounds/dialogue on there are unavailable in higher quality elsewhere.

I'll update my first post with the resources I'm looking for/looking to extract sounds from so that people can offer advice on how to rip, or even upload the folders if they've already done it themselves.

And of course, people can suggest more resources.

I love it when a project comes together. :-D

I think Jedi Outcast has sound files which I have, maybe they could be of some use to you.

Hey doubleofive. As I just said in my updated 1st post, I used to have all the sounds from JK2, but don't anymore after wiping my hard drive. I only have the dialogue now, no sound effects.

If you have every single sound already ripped, that'd be really useful!
