Did you see the letter from Ridley Scott that comes with the 5-disc set? I especially like the second part, George should follow Ridley's example.

I’ll have to wait tell next year to buy this as I’m not in the financial position at the moment and I’m a cult fan of this brilliant work that Ridley Scott produced back in (1982).

One vitally important question now I know the new version as a (six-track Dolby stereo digital soundtrack) the BIG question is, does the theatrical (1982) have a six-track Dolby stereo soundtrack and not some poor excuse Dolby stereo 4:2:4 twin track soundtrack.

I was never fortunate to see Blade Runner in 70mm six-track Dolby stereo at the local cinema here in my home town of Bournemouth, thou the cinema is capable of showing 70mm with dual projection, they only screened a conventional 35mm optical Dolby stereo A type print.

Over the years I slightly became obsessed with the Blade Runner soundtrack, and thou the laserdisc directors cut (1992) didn’t quite blow me away like the (1982) version as Deckard and Rachel drive away into the sunset with the saxophone playing and then fading out into the Vangelis score left be totally breathless with the end credits rolling.

Yeah turn the volume up and add a little bit more sub bass extension level I wonder want the original (1982) six-track Dolby stereo mix sounds and feels like?

I don't think JediTemple70mm is doubting they are 5.1 He just wants to know if the archival six-tracks used for this release are true six-tracks or twin six-tracks.

Yeah, I usually don't spend money on big DVD boxsets or special collection. If it is a movie I really want to own, then usually the bare minimum does it for me, but when it comes to BR this is not the case. This is the set I think all of us BR fans have been waiting a long time for. I am really annoyed about the four disc and five disc sets though, I really want that fifth disc with the workprint on it, but I couldn't care less about the brief case or the extra bits it comes with, and I certianly don't want to spend so much extra money for them and the last disc. Why couldn't they just include the last disc with the four disc set and make it a five disc set without the brief case? I guess I am just going to have to cope with not having that last disc.

I’m not, doubting it I’m just being cautious because some so called past DVD titles that I brought where so appalling for example the large quid box-set of Alien that has the so called originals and directors cut.

Well Alien as been a popular title and sorry for drifting (off-topic) since this is related to Ridley Scott, Alien as been a popular title for sound in the home cinema after its realise in cinemas back in 1979, I might also add Star Wars and Close Encounters of the third Kind.

So point is I’ve noticed some dreadful re-mixing on Alien directors cut, you know the part where Dallas is crawling though the (air-ducts)? The iris that opens and closes on that version has part of the mix or (centre phantom) blended into the centre channel oh no!

If you where to compare the original version on the first Alien DVD edition you will notice the six-track Dolby stereo mix or Dolby 5.1 is more exact sounding to the 1979 realise.

The colour tinting and so fourth what a waste of time, I switched the film sound off and listened to the audio commentary track sessions which are different from the first edition as Ridley Scott hosts the first one and again on the (so called new one) along with a second track with cast and crew.

So I’m just genuinely being cautious. One of the reasons I brought DVD in the first place after waiting three-years since it was realised in the UK, was the large category of tittles and the readability of many original titles that where realised in six-track Dolby stereo on the 70mm format, and Blade Runner is now one such title that I’m interested in.

If you read my signature that applies to the Star Wars films there are some Dolby titles that where produced and encoded for format 43 which is commonly know as Dolby 5.1 because it was it used split-stereo-surrounds and one single sub bass channel.

Only the originals from the 70mm six-track Dolby stereo Dolby format 42 will sound better on DVD.

But don’t get you’re hopes up too high because, I’ve given up almost in buy more Star Wars DVD titles and I doubt it will ever happen I doubt you or I will ever hear the 70mm six-track Dolby stereo versions that where used for the original, Star Wars films, that is not going to happen, otherwise he would have done it last year…instead of that he pulled a fast one on the fans, and he damn well knows he did.

I doubt he even cared to read one major forum site where this discussion was talked about until everyone was blue in the face. Some wanted anamorphic I wanted the original six-track Dolby stereo mix, whether it’s encoded as Dolby 4.1 or 5.1 doesn’t make much difference the surrounds where (monaural) hence there’s no need to have the disc display Dolby 5.1 on the AVR or AVP.

There a few other films like Cocoon that is Dolby 4.1 hence 70mm Dolby format 42, but there was two tracks playing the same sub bass track, and what’s the point in that someone might say. Anyway it’s, nether here or there.

Well, sound mixing is usually so subtle that 19 out of 20 people don't ever notice, so theres less pressure or incentive to get it that exact. As long as its faithful to the effect and intent of the original and sounds the same people not only don't mind, they don't notice. I think a lot of the time since mixers have to go back to the stems or original elements anyway they think why not sweeten it up, since theres usually room to improve in the original mixes with the new technology available, and the changes are so minor that the original four or six-track mixes become superfluous. At the end of the day it usually becomes unnecessary, except in the cases of original mono or stereo tracks that sometimes are offered (more for novelty than anything else). If you included a new mix plus the original multi-channel then you'd have to sacrifice picture quality--which people do notice.

Star Wars is a bit of special case though, not in the least because the six-track mix is a bit of a legend itself, but also because its a distintcly different version of the soundtrack, along with the stereo and mono versions. It would be awesome to have all three on a disk of the original 1977 version of the film, and the six-track, though perhaps not as nice as a new 5.1 mix of the original would be for home theater, would probably suffice as a high-quality multi-channel version of the film. Would be awesome to have all three original mixes plus a new 5.1 but I'm not sure if they could fit in on a disk without taking away something from the image. I would say though that because of the demand and notoriety of the 1977 mixes that theres a very good chance we'll see these with a restored 1977 version of the film one day.

Hello there.

This was done with, “The Abyss” two versions of the film on one DVD disc! The UK version is cut due to (the rat sequence). Anyway, I just hope I like the Blade Runner box-set when I get around to buying it, and I hope this is the last time we see this film on DVD or whatever else format that may come around.

For some reason I thought that the Director's Cut I saw theatrically in '93 had Dolby Digital sound. Must be my memory going.

I applaud Scott's philosophy for this release, and can only hope that one day Lucas does the same. When Jay starts the inevitable new petition for an original trilogy HD-DVD/Blu-ray release, this should be used as an example of best practice. Maybe even have a separate petition for fans to reply to Scott's letter and express their thanks for his actions.

IT EVEN HAS THE NON-RELEASED MUSIC THAT THE NEW 3-DISC SET HAS, BUT THERE IS ONE THING THAT IT DOESN'T HAVE. IT DOESN'T HAVE THE NEWLY RECORDED MUSIC BY VANGELIS. THIS IS WHERE YOUR MONEY WILL BE WELL SPENT. THOUGH THE MUSIC IS NEW IT PERFECTLY FITS INTO BLADERUNNER. SERIOUSLY, YOU'LL THANK ME.

LOL. I'm sure it comes across a bit differently but the version playing in my mind right now based off that description is hilarious.

I personally thought the briefcase was one of the coolest parts of the 5-disc set. I probably won't store it on my DVD shelf, but I still think it looks cool.

At least the brief case comes with some crap. I bought the "regular" blu-ray edition. While you get all 5 discs, you get nary an insert or anything.

I finally watched the Dangerous Days doc. Absolutely fantastic, and it was amazing to see all of those unused shots that they intercut throughout. I also was surprised to find the special effects section quite entertaining--normally I get bored with these parts because its always the same processes being explained over, but I hadn't realised how much in-camera stuff was done in BR. It also brought attention back to one of the great what-ifs of cinema: Ridley Scott's Dune. Especially hearing how he wanted to take what he had done in Alien and bring it a giant step closer to Star Wars. David Lynch's version sure sucked.
