Best IVTC filter/program & lossless compression codec??
I've noticed a lot of people using virtual dub. It seems to be leaving a slight ghosting effect. What is the best way to handle the IVTC process?

Also, I've read on several sites concerning IVTC that this process should be done before any other filters, any comments?

I've not seen any "ghosting" effect in VirtualDub, and yes, it should be done before everything else.
MeBeJedi: Sadly, I believe the prequels are beyond repair.
JediRandy: They're certainly beyond any repair you're capable of making.

MeBeJedi: You aren't one of us.
Go-Mer-Tonic: I can't say I find that very disappointing.

JediRandy: I won't suck as much as a fan edit.

Ghosting is either present in your source, or caused if you use a temporal smoother for noise reduction. IVTC should not cause ghosting.

I recommend AVISynth and the Decomb filter.

Check out this link. It shows that using a blend method among others will give you a ghosting effect in the deinterlaceing process.

Deinterlacing Filter Tests

What type of deinterlacing in the IVTC process is everyone using (e.g. blend, bob, etc)

Also,
CHECK this link out, it is the best deinterlacing filter I've come across:

MSU Filter

I just emailed them about a release date.

& this 8 to 1 lossless codec (I've never seen anything like this, not even squeeze give this ratio)

MSU LOSSLESS CODEC

FYI, I haven't tested this codec yet but will very soon.

Has anyone used any of these MSU filters?

Khamul, I'd regard the MSU filters as a double edged sword. they tempt you with how good they are (can personally vouch for their sharpen filter, it's bloody marvellous) and then they hit you over the head with how bloody slow they are.

I don't hink I've come across so many good(but unoptimised filters) eg

sharpen filter runs at 1-2fps on a PIII933, 1.7ghz athlon and a P4 2.8. ie it's not been optimised in the slightest to take into account processor speeds. which is disappointing.

I queried MSU on this, complimenting them on the quality of the filter etc but they haven't bothered to reply in three weeks.

the deinterlace article was an interesting read but bear in mind that the example given in the article is a worse case. TNG particularly is a bad source using as it does a mix of blended fields, interlaced, progressive and other sources.

I used smart deinterlace and blended fields from a number of different captured material and they've been fine with no ghosting at all, so while I can appreciate what the author is saying, bear in mind that his offered solution solves the problem for THAT clip. it won't necessarily hold true for other clips.

all I can suggest is you experiement and see for yourself, nothing can better personal experience in this field.

Yeah, the MSU sharpen filter is awesome, and I'll probably end up using it for my DVD's. But damn is it slow. Somebody needs to jump on those guys to release a p4 optimized version.

I use Cinema Tools or JES deinterlance both pretty good

The MSU guys say because thier deinterlacer was developed with SamSung it will be a year before it is availble for general public use

Well, Friday Night I'm going to play around with capturing some frames of the SW LD. Media 100 has a 16x9 option. I'm going to give it a try.

Has anyone used Cleaner for ITVC. I saw this mentioned somewhere. We have it but I've never looked at it for these purposes before (as all we normally do is NTSC video at work)?

"Media 100 has a 16x9 option."

I'm guessing this is for anamorphic DVD.

Yeh I have used cleaner version 6.01 they call it intelecine it does a good job, check page 69 of the manual, the only problem with cleaner is that its so s-l-o-w to encode mpeg2 it takes three times as long as Compressor or Bit Vice and the quality is much worse IMHO.

I am really just looking into the ITVC process. I'll be encoding my mpg2s with cinemacraft (9 pass encode).

I thought I may use cleaner, if it were good at deinterlacing, to spit out another lossless avi and then run it through CC for the mpeg2.

MeBeJedi, THANKS a ton!!

It looks like I'm better off staying in 4:3 until I'm ready to crop & run some filters. I haven't seen that forum before. Very usefull.

Actully, given me & most of my friends have plain jane 4:3 TVs I'll probally do 2 versions (4:3 & animorphic).

Has anyone tried MSU codec for lossless compression?

This would allow me to easily store the raw footage on a 100 gig drive. That would be amazing!!

"MeBeJedi, THANKS a ton!!"

Not a problem. Didn't want you to do a whole lot of unnecessary work for nothing.

I've not tried MSU, but Huffy works great, and every program I've used recognizes it flawlessly. I had no qualms trying it based on Laserman's tried and true experience, and it's not let me down. I guess I could try MSU to see what the relative file sizes are.

[EDIT] Saw this on the MSU website...
Known problems:

* Sometimes doesn't install properly on Windows'98 (some problems in the .inf).
* Sometimes codec avalable from VirtualDub, but unavalable in Adobe Premiere 6.5. If you know how to solve it, please mail us! You won't be forgiven.

Hmmmm, I don't think I'm got to use this for my master files. Besides, Huffy is just behind it in both tests, so I'm content.
