Jedi KnightSo it looks like a v2 is going to happen then. I guess there's no point in burning a disc of the current version now.
I have one request for your future release: have better explanations for the different versions.
While the current Overdose, Doctor's Orders, etc. is cute, I find it hard to remember the differences when getting ready to watch it.

Back in February, I did say that if enough people disliked the multiple aspect ratio presentation, then I wouldn't mind going the overcropping route for version 2.0. However, there has been next to no real criticism of the film's presentation and so there's no real need for V2.0. Of course, that doesn't mean I haven't thought about working on V2.0. As you know from all of your fine work, nothing is ever really perfect for us fan editors and preservationists, especially when we aren't given an entire movie or its deleted footage on a silver platter. Naturally there's a small list of improvements I'd like to make to the Primitive Screwhead Edition, but they're so minor that only me and maybe three other people would notice them.
Now if the SciFi channel were to somehow get a HD transfer of the tv cut, then I would be all over it. I think it's possible given that the tv cut of Ace Ventura was recently given a new HD transfer. I mean, who saw that coming? Hopefully all the studios will see the benefit of creating new HD transfers of old tv cuts like this one in order to maximize their profits from advertisers - after all, a longer movie means more commercial breaks. So if this was to happen, then I would definitely create a V2.0 and I would probably add some flashier, more descriptive menus, and possibly create some special features. But until then, I'm content to just help out with other Army of Darkness projects and spend most of my time finishing school.

Jedi KnightI was surprised that I did not find the aspect ratios to be an issue.
They way people were talking about it, I thought the movie would switch between 16x9 and 4x3 or something. I did not expect the difference to be black borders on the right/left.
Watched on a device with overscan, the difference is invisible.
Btw, I am aware that Comcast has Army of Darkness in its free onDemand pool of movies. I don't know which cut it is, but if it's extended, it would be a digital source, if not HD.

I am very glad to hear it! It was difficult to ultimately come to the decision to present the tv scenes like that, but they do seem to play well on most traditional tv sets, and if played on larger widescreen units, the black bars never seem to distract. I took the time to reframe many of the SciFi shots - even performing a vertical pan & scan on the first shot of the SciFi-exclusive windmill sequence so that I could include the creepy deer antlers above the door. This was a detail you never saw on the letterboxed workprint footage and it really grew on me.

Thanks for the info. If anyone can check it out, please let us know.

Jedi KnightOne more thing I've been meaning to ask about this edit. The deleted scene with Henry the Red feels a bit out of place. Do we know accurately that's where it belonged or was that a creative decision?
IMHO it seemed a bit early in the prepping for battle montage, and sort of messes with the day/night cycles of the surrounding scenes.
Btw, I want to send kudos once again. In the past when I watched AoD, it always felt uneven like something was missing... turns out there was. It's a much smoother viewing experience now.

Padawan LearnerYes, the Henry The Red scene is placed in that part of the film in the deleted scenes on the DVD. The end and beginning of the surrounding scenes bookend it there.

THANK YOU.
The only differences between the three versions are at the beginning and end:
OVERDOSE - Regular opening and Apocalyptic ending
DOCTOR ORDERED - Regular opening and S-Mart ending
OVERDOSE (ORIGINAL) - Alternate opening (from deleted scenes) and Apocalyptic ending
Everything else in between seems to be the same.

Jedi KnightIt's pretty easy to remember.
The 'overdose' refers to the potion that brings him back in time. The theatrical ending he takes the amount he's told, the Apocalyptic ending he OD's on it.

Padawan LearnerIs this still available, or is the distribution being discontinued in case the upcoming official non-primitive version is the same thing?

Jedi KnightThe upcoming version is just another dip, this time HD. Don't expect anything new... or as cool as this release.

I want to know what happened to the plans they sent you.(bump)
I must say it's nice, but it would've been pleasant to see the 'I ain't that good.' scene included instead of 'Good. Bad. I'm the guy with the gun.'
I mean, come on...

There was a lot of consideration that went into what lines to use. For this particular instance, I chose "Good. Bad. I'm the guy with the gun." because it's a fan favorite (at least for those who grew up with the U.S. Theatrical Version) and because Sam Raimi himself said he preferred it.

Not meaning to be rude, but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't have been a big use of space reinserting the 'I ain't that good.' line as an optional branch. Otherwise, that's about the only gripe I had about your fanedit. The only other semi-gripe I have would be the quality of the reinserted deleted scenes, but that's to blame on the source material.

Thanks Ridgeshark! This should be awesome, once I can get a hold of it. :-)

Padawan LearnerJust search Army Of Darkness Primitive Screwhead edition and bound to find something. And yes, the fanedit does contain the Evil Ash ripping down Shiela's dress scene. Now, if a 2.0 version manages to come out, I suggest the new Universal R1 Screwhead Edition be use as a new source and use Evil Ash's Line "I...live...again." from the theatrical version (the Director's Cut one didn't seem to feel right to me.)

Ok, so I've been a fan of the trilogy for years (I'm 27). I've had the first 2 for a while(VHS and eventually DVD). I finally got around to picking up the Widescreen Director's Cut gold boxed VHS(don't ask). Then, I researched and found out about the gazillion editions that exist. Your's seems to be the most complete, but I haven't been able to find a decent torrent with more than 1 or 2 seeders. Is there a faster way to download this?

Keeper of the Taco SandwichI've had this for a while, but just popped in to say thanks!
I own the "Official Bootleg" Director's Cut version on DVD and, while I much prefer the alternate ending in that version, I was appalled at the video quality. For an official release, it should have looked much better.
This fanedit is what the Director's Cut DVD should have been.
