That's a cool million or two right there? I doubt we will ever know how much they spent in total on all the advertising though.
The one thing in Lucasfilm's favor is they didn't have to make costly new film prints.
This year Super Bowl ads ran $3.5m each.
With the exception of some IMAX 70mm prints, I think that all 3D movies are now all digital.
I would like to know its advertising budget and what LFL's expectations were. Given the success of the '97 SEs and then TLK and BatB just months before it - neither of which probably had half as much advertising as TPM - I'm betting they were thinking something like 75m, with a floor of 50 and ceiling of 100. But, really, I'm just making that up, as I have no real clue.
That was the range I was expecting too. I'm surprised TPM3D did so badly, but I can't say I am disappointed.l

The video games aren't doing that bad. tOR might have the same development dollars as the 3D conversions.

I am ready for the trials!Just wanted to bump this thread to add:
I saw the second half of the RotS blu-ray at my uncle's place a couple weeks back and there is no way Lucas is gonna pass up converting the other two prequels into 3D because this movie is pretty three-dimensional already!

I've been thinking about the 3Ds.
I went to see TPM3D out of curiosity for the conversion process. TBH, I'm not sure about going to the time, money, or trouble for AOTC3D or ROTS3D. I understand what the conversion process looks like now. I'm sure I'll go to OT3D, but the time, trouble and money there is enough to seem a bit daunting. 13+ hours in movie seats, 6 seperate excursions, $80 dollars just for the tickets, and all that for films I own and have seen several times.
I've been wondering about an alternative approach:
Could official fan-edits be created of the saga? Some deleted scenes and new FX incorporated for a substantialy different experience? Made consistant with each other? About 90 minutes each for ANH, ESB, and ROTJ with a TG style cut of 2 and 3 that is as consistant as possible with the new EU? More than that, could ANH and ESB be shown in one go and then ROTJ and the preq together also? There could be a 20 minute intermission between 4&5 and preq&6 to boost concession sales and make it easier for the kids. $18 for each double feature? 2 trips out? New material for a future box-set? Set up for commercial TV?
TITANIC was 3 hours for a ship to sink. People are accustomed to going to ball games for 3 hours with a halftime intermission.
OTOH, think of the terrible controversy. :)

star wars fan since age 2Wow - Zombie's sources were right.
interesting they wont use President's day weekend. Even if the superbowl ads did not make a marked difference in exposure, surely they must have seen that extra holiday helped a great deal. Were there any movies coming out early 2013 that would have interfered?
its interesting that AOTC run will be 3 weeks - thats how long TPM 3D was in theatres right?
2013...dang. 30 years after ROTJ!!
sort of off-topic: has anyone seen any commercials for the ROTLA IMAX re-release? I haven't heard a whole lot regarding this.
I wonder if more movie fans would support imax re-releases or 3D re-releases? I would prefer the former - but only if its real iMAX - not those mini-imax's that suck.

I am ready for the trials! It makes me wonder how they're gonna handle the originals.
I kinda wouldn't be surprised if they decide to wait until the big 4-0 in 2017 and just spread them out over a few weeks like they did in '97.
On the other hand, the only reason I care even the slightest bit about these 3D re-releases is quite simple:
The chance exists that Lucas will do fresh 4K scans for the OT.
Honestly, I can't see it going any other way.
For TPM, they had the 2K files to go back to. Presumably it will be the same for Clones and Sith (yes, the cameras were only 1920:1080, but the movies' visual effects and final mastering were "finished" at 2K rez).
The originals were scanned at 2K almost a decade ago for the dvd, but lowry's restoration was only done at 1080p (1920 horizontal resolution, scaled down slightly from 2048). I don't know what source LFL used for that 3D "test" of the ANH footage they did years ago, but the Lowry-restored stuff is stuck at hdtv resolution, not cinema resolution. That means they either go back to the 2K scans and have Lowry (or some other company) re-do the restoration at full 2K this time, or they do the smart thing and just start all over from scratch at 4K.
If they were to do that, I find it very likely they would also see fit to finally restore the original versions as well. THAT'S the only reason I care about all this 3D post-conversion bidniss.

Then I would stop caring if I were you, as there's no connection whatsoever between a possible fresh scan of the Special Editions and the original films being restored.
We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Or better 8K scans of the OT.That way the will be more detail in the films if they do add DNR for the 3D transfers.

The original trilogy was scanned in at 2K resolution. (which is slightly higher than 1080p, actually they might've been scanned in at 1080p...not sure about that one)
"DNR" or "Digital noise reduction" gets rid of film noise but blurs the image slightly and you lose detail.
What he's suggesting is to scan the film in at 8K resolution (insanely high) and apply DNR at that level. That way the film will be slightly blurred, but because it is done at such a high resolution, it won't be as noticable and the film will retain alot of detail when scaled back to 1080p for bluray and 2K/4K for cinema projection purposes.

Han D. SoloI'm afraid that's not quite how it works. If you scaled the new Episode I 1080p transfer down to DVD resolution, it wouldn't look any better either.

That's not what anyone's saying, what's being said is that if you lose some details at a higher resolution, when scaled down it'll be much less noticable than if I lost that detail by applying a filter at say 1080p.

I don't think that Lucas will make a new scan of the OT. Technically speaking, there is no reason why he must make a new scan. Some crappy 3D in post and that is basically all we're getting. Look at the Blu ray version of the OT. The new changes just scream 3D. The rock in front of R2's hiding spot in ANH and the new front of Jabba's palace in ROTJ. We will geht another version of Lowry's scan with additional changes. It won't live up to anyone's standards of 3D and Lucas will blame it on the OT's age. And still, people will just walk into theatres because it's Star Wars on the big screen and in 3D.

Thanks for posting the picture, 005. The angle of the gate is different. I believe it was changed just to make it more appealing in the 3D version.
005, you fail to see George's true vision. Jabba's palace is basically an inverted version of Mary Poppin's bag. Big on the outside and small on the inside. ;)
