'Blu, not Blue!' campaign supporter - the struggle continues...
The eventual 'Blu-rays' of the saga will be nice and all that (although I get the feeling that I'm going to still prefer Adywan's eventual 'Revisited' versions....), but I'm really looking forward to the possibility of seeing a 3D theatrical release of the Star Wars movies in my lifetime too.
The new-fangled 'conversion' process of turning existing 2D movies into 3D ones, that George has done tests with, is already successfully being used on other movies.
Anyway, what with 'Avatar' and many other potential 3D blockbusters in the pipeline, I thought I'd ask what others here happen to think of a new generation (as well as themselves!) being exposed to a 3D version of the saga back on the 'big screen' eventually....

From an artistic point of view the director has control on the "amount of 3D" in a scene. Elements of interest can be highlighted or even exaggerated in 3D, while backgrounds or less important elements may fade to 2D. For example the company that has been "dimensionalizing" Star Wars movies for Lucas ("dimensionalizing" is converting old stock to 3D from stereo clues in film, similar to what "colorizing" does to B&W). The showed a minute-long clip of a Star Wars space battle scene dimenensionalized in around eight different ways. And the results are artisitically different depending on what the director wants to emphasize.
(P.S. Lucas is perfectionist and not completely happy with the current state of dimensionalization, so he hasnt released the 3D versions yet. The parts I saw were amazing and I cant wait for the entire movies.)

Though i thought the reshot imax opening of episode IV Muren Shot in 70mm for Ben Burtt's documentary was incredibly cool, and i also thought the imax cut of attack of the clones was better because it was shorter,lol.
I know i have bashed revenge of the sith, But no IMAX version was retarded. The opening space battle would have been worth it.
Plus why no 70mm presentations for the three prequels, would have been possible if all three were shot on film.

I am ready for the trials!Aside from IMAX, I don't think there have been 70mm engagements of any feature film since Titanic, and allegedly Cameron had to throw his weight around to get prints made for those.
Sad to say, a lot of theaters built since the 90's don't have 70mm gear, and a lot of older screens that did are shuttered or gone now. :(

Agreed. Saw it at the Music Box in Chicago (not a huge screen, sadly), and it blew my mind. It made me sad that 35mm is the standard (and that digital is slowly replacing it) - if only 70mm were less expensive ...

That last line is certainly true of the modern state of Star Wars. After the SE and PT, I don't think it's possible for major Star Wars stuff to come out that's not tainted by the SE/PT mentality, unless they conspicuously reject the SE and PT, which isn't going to happen.

Tauntaun herder-Damn Fool Idealistic CrusaderThere is nothing like true 70mm. (Only thing that comes close is VistaVision.) This dimensionalizing sounds so wrong to me. If colorization was bad enough-now we have some third party coming in and adding completely new dimensions to make SW 3D? No thank you. If something wasn't originally shot in 3D or with the process in mind (Dial M for Murder) then I don't think that you can go back and try to make it that way. Or that you should. Thank goodness George hasn't greenlighted this yet. (Would love to see that test footage reel just to see what they're doing.)

To me 3D is cool as long as the movie don't throw things to the face of the audience every 2 minutes (unless it's a ride of course)
Bad thing about old 3D was that the effects were way to over the top, resulting headaches.
I heard Cameron said that a simple 3D scene with two people walking in a garden with the snow falling could be a good use of 3D cause in that case the effect would help the mood of the scene and would not be just an "in your face" effect.
I think 3D could be a good tool in the right hands. About turning 2D movies in 3D... I don't know. As long as it's just for the fun of it, why not.
All in all I think we are still taken out of the movie by the 3D because we are not very used to it yet. I don't want 3D to take over 2D, but I'm not against it.

3D Star Wars will only look good if it's the OT. The PT's CG is not anywhere close yet to make you feel in the movies ( at least TPM and AOTC)

My guess - way back when - was that Lucas would attach a teaser for 3D Star Wars to Avatar when it hits in December. Yeah, looks like that ain't gonna happen (I mean, we would've heard it by now, right?).
All of his talk about it has probably only been that - talk. Obviously they converted a few scenes from ANH but that's just a few scenes. For all we know, that's all they ever did.

Padawan LearnerI'm curious to know how much money this 3d star wars project has to make to be profitable. Probably a lot and yet the longer they wait, the more it seems like no one will really care. Star Wars is becoming such a specialized, narrow cult thing, like KISS or something. Right now there's a Star Wars Concert tour and deluxe Clone Wars Blu-ray set coming and you can just feel the not-excitement in the air. Converting (and releasing) SIX movies is really gonna cost a lot, it might not be viable/cheap enough for a very long time.

of Earth.I almost took the troop to see the Toy Story Double Feature in 3D. Until I saw the ticket total came to $60, and that's without snacks or parking or anything. And I doubted my kids' ability to sit still and enjoy 3 hours of movies they've seen 100s of times. It's too bad... I was really looking forward to it. I guess they'll just have to figure out how to get 3D to me at home better. I'm willing to spend a $k or so to get high quality 3D at home (as long as there are plenty of movies to watch). As long as I don't have to drop $100 per movie to take the fam to the cinema.
Sony keeps saying 2010 is the year they bring 3D home. My concern is that there will be a 3D format war between Panasonic/Dolby and now Sony hinting that they will have their own format to throw in the ring.
Sony never saw a an oportunity for a format war they didn't like.
