I think with the new Jacksonized version coming soon, you shouldn't have a problem pumping up interest. What would the differences be between the Criterion edition and this upcoming DVD release?

King Kong (1933) DVD - November 22nd, 2005

I had that LD, but got rid of it once I recorded the commentary to DVD-R. IMO, the only thing that really makes it worth getting. Especially since this is coming out November 22.

IIRC, this was the first title Criterion ever released! Possibly the first commentary track ever done as well...

YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!!!!

I've never seen this but I'm sure I want it

Me too, even if only for the commentary. I'll soon be doing a transfer of the 1991 Turner/RKO LD set of King Kong and Son of Kong and would love to be able to include the commentary from the Criterion disc. The project was planned before my longtime partner in copyright infringement knew of the new DVD and before Son of Kong was announced, but I'm gonna carry through with it at least for learning and practice's sake.

i didnt do the commentary, just the movie(which is now finished)maybe i will go back and get that too.

With the DVD finally being released in a few months, I guess it's not really worth it to make the LD conversion public since the new DVD should look great (they've spent years tracking down the best film elements).

But the commentary is definitely worth preserving since it was the first ever recorded! Maybe if you don't want to go to the trouble of releasing an entire disc for a commentary, it might be more convenient to rip the commentary and maybe release it as an mp3 file or something. I know it's a track I'm very interested in listening to.

King Kong (1933) DVD - November 22nd, 2005

Who did the Criterion commentary? The DVD actually has a commentary on it, according to amazon:
Audio Commentary: Ray Harryhausen and Ken Ralston with Merian C. Cooper, and Fay Wray

So what features were on the Criterion release? Is there any overlap, or is the DVD all new? And if there were Criterion exclusives, would that make the transfer worth it?

That movie scares me. The stop motion, it pains my eyes! King Kong creeps me out!!

it really doesnt matter,i wont be releasing it(not with it officially coming out),and i dont think i will do the running commentary, the dvd of the movie is finished, and the commentary on this criterion collection is provided by the late film historian Ron Haver.I will give a few away though,to Rikter, boba feta, segaflip.
