***The "EditDroid" Trilogy DVD Info and Feedback Thread***
I just got this in a trade. The guy I got it from told me the sound was one of the original 1977 soundtracks (which is where nearly all of the differences lay), but Aunt Beru's voice is the dub that's still in the current version and the more common "Blast it, Biggs!" is heard rather than "Blast it, Wedge!" I have a VHS of a tecline of an original theatrical print, and both of those audio differences are present there, so I'm not sure if the audio on this DVD is one of the original soundtracks or what. Below are some screenshots.

First, the most important menus:

(I have no idea if this is the Isomix isolated score)

I caught it early for the cap to illustrate the lack of Ep IV/ANH, but the whole crawl looks really ncie

Other screenshots can be supplied by request. I've emailed the guy I got this from to get as much info about it as I can. Of course, if anyone here has any info, please speak up.

Rik, I can send you a copy if you'd like to take a look at it. (BTW, you sent my package, right? )

@RevB:

I wonder how many people are wishing you'd turned on your PM?? (I don't know why, but it's off by default. Another one of the OT.com quirks, like sending e-mail for *every* post made to a thread you're subscribed to, and starting you off on page one of a thread you're subscribed to when you click on the link in an e-mail. D'oh.)

Other than some pretty wicked combing (comb filter error?) in the Leia-on-Tantive-IV shot, that all looks pretty sweet. Anyone who's anybody is going to want a copy. Including me, of course....

I'd definitely love a copy of this.

Some folks don't like PM's - I prefer emails myself of PM's

Wow, those features look eerily similar to what my own dvd's will have. Awesome menus too. They give me some great ideas.

Any idea where this set came from or who made it?

Zion - I bet yours will look a bit SWEETER! (gotta one up em' all!)

Rev - Any NFO or other info on this? I just scoured all my SW sites and was not able to find any other info...

I asked the person I got it from, and this is all the information he was able to supply.

I'll do the best I can to describe this DVD-R...this is a digitally edited recreation of the original 1977 theatrical release with the original opening crawl (minus the "Episode IV" tag). It also has an isolated score track, including musical material that did not make the final cut of the film. Also included: the first theatrical trailer from December, 1976, and select artwork from the movie by Ralph McQuarrie (it is also presented as a DVD-ROM feature).

I also supplied him with a link to this board, so he may wind up here at some point. I've given you guys all the info I've got. And, like I said, if anyone wants any specific screenshots, I'll be happy to supply.

@Rik: I'll dupe a copy tonight and send it out tomorrow.

@anyone else who wants a copy: email me and we'll either work out a trade or a B&P. I'd send out a few complimentary copies to some of the regulars but I'm running seriously low on blank media, so that's out of the question for now.

Also, PMs are now on.

Heh, well let's just say you run the risk of soiling your pants once you see mine.
That reminds me, I better get that new clip uploaded....

My first thought on this DVD is that whoever made these borrowed features from other bootlegs, including the Isomix score and put them together with some new menus. I'm not saying this is the case, just that it's possible. I'm sure someone like Rik would be able to determine if this is in fact an original transfer.
"Original Theatrical" Pre-ANH DVD I've just acquired
That was my first thought as well, but since its all on the same disc its a worthy addition IMO.
"Original Theatrical" Pre-ANH DVD I've just acquired
I suspect the same about the feature borrowing, but like I said, I can't be positive. The gallery of McQuarrie art is scanned at a nice resolution, though, which made me a bit happy.

Even if it's true, this is still an awesome DVD.

Impressive looking dvd - with some great choices.

*** LOTS OF INFO ON HOW THESE DISCS WERE MADE APPEAR ON PAGE 6 OF THIS THREAD ***

Great menus and superb choice of artwork for them too.

Sourced from the 1993 Definitive Collection Laserdiscs (ntsc?) in Letterbox widescreen, with isolated music score option, and some specific dvd covers - nice touches all around.

Looks pretty good. In some parallel universe, this is the DVD Lucasfilm released.
I'm interested in finding out if it's the real original crawl or an incredible simulation. Could you possibly get a screencap of it past the point the Empire of Dreams documentary cuts away? Thanks.

As I'm not quite sure where Empire of Dreams cuts off (I haven't watched it since I first got the set, so I don't remember), here's screencaps of the whole thing.

Without seeing it in motion, its hard to tell, but that crawl looks 'generated' in those stills.
"Original Theatrical" Pre-ANH DVD I've just acquired
The crawl is its own chapter, so I could rip a VOB of it, but I don't have any webspace to put it. If someone has FTP capabilities and they'd like to host it, PM me and I'll get on it.

If you look closely at the font in the opening crawl (as seen in the "Empire Of Dreams" documentary), you will tell that it is much slimmer than the font represented in the recreation. Whoever transferred this version apparently would have spent much more money doing a visual restoration of the crawl as all that was available to him (aside from the print represented on the "Dreams" documentary) was a 16MM telecine, and that contains the original mono soundtrack, so it is quite obvious the opening crawl on the recreated DVD was computer generated. I think whoever did this otherwise perfect job is to be commended for recreating, as much as possible, the original theatrical experience.

Of course, as we now know, there were different "original versions", as explained by Ben Burtt in the commentary track of the "A New Hope" DVD. There is, of course, the one with the original mono soundtrack, then there was a 2-channel Dolby track, and a 6-channel Dolby track (for the 70MM prints). Each one has varying differences in dialogue and sound effects. The recreated DVD could have possibly been recreated to resemble one of the stereo prints, since the version I originally saw in my local Century Complex in Sacramento, CA in 1977 (or was it '78?) was a 35MM 2-channel Dolby print with the redubbed Aunt Beru voice, the different Death Star voice (i.e. "30 seconds and closing'), and minus 3PO's explanation of the tractor beam.

I also did see the original mono version, in a 35MM cropped 1.85:1 print at the Starlite Drive-in (also in Sacramento, and since been demolished). This had the original Aunt Beru voice, the original Death Star voice, and 3PO's explanation of the tractor beam. This print also had a trailer for "The Empire Strikes Back" at the end of the credits (the one with Harrison Ford's narration). The "Story Of Star Wars" album was also based on the mono version.

I would like to see the mono version in some form. E-mail me if you could.

I've got a VHS of a tecline of the original 1977 version, and I'm pretty sure it's the mono mix. It has the original Beru voice and "Blast it, Wedge!". I'm looking into getting it put onto DVD so I can work with the audio track easier.

Speaking of which, anyone wanna put a VHS onto DVD for me?
