There are different sound mixes from different video releases over the years. Also, there are 70mm and 35mm sound mixes for ESB that differ.
I've thought about expanding my list here to include the different sound mixes as well as visual differences. The list would be significantly longer and more complicated that way, of course. But it might be worth it.

I just got Puggo's 8mm DVD the other day, and there were a few really noticeable audio differences in the 8mm version of ESB, all lines spoken by Leia- one is during the asteroid scene, and the other 2 that I noticed were during the Cloud City escape scene.

There's a difference in that take between most home video releases and the ESB DVD. The version in the 2004 DVD is from the 70mm mix.
Just out of curiosity, are WookieGroomer's WMVs still the best source for the 2004 OT?
I think that the purest HD release is, yes. However, they lack the color corection/changes that Adywan's newest 720p editions have.

I'm completely new to this: how and where do I find good versions of the 1997 SE's? I used to have the tapes. Is there a good source online or elsewhere? These were my first introduction to the Star Wars world, and I would like to see them again instead of the atrocious 2004 versions.

The best set is known as the 'TB' which is a recording from a French cable channel but it is not currently available to download, I'm working on a better version combining the TB set with other sources and the 5.1 audio from the laserdiscs. I have the Star Wars Trilogy on dvd and i thought i would come here because i cant stand the 2004 special editions there a disgrace to Star Wars. Lucas should have never changed them they were fine the way they were but i cant stand the Original version of Return Of The Jedi and that Yub Nub ending im looking for the 1997 remastered version five star special edition. Does any one know were i cant get this dvd because its the ending that i saw the theaters and i want to see again i fear that Lucas destroyed this version for greed so that no one can see Sebastian Shaw again.

It that is the case, where they did get the footage used in the "Empire of Dreams" documentary (included in the bonus disc of the 2004 DVD)? The footage in that documentary is definitly from the original version, and it looks better than what was relesed with the 2006 DVD.
What gives?

Most of the footage from the Empire of Dreams documentary is from the 1997 special edition. It includes Boba's original voice, Han's jacket in the carbon freezing room and the end of Jedi with Sebastian Shaw as Anakin near the end.
There is some footage of the original version, has anyone compared it side by side with the 2006 video to see if it is the same video source (but in 16x9) or from something else? If it's from something else such as a decent quality film print, that doesn't necessarily mean Lucas is sitting on a decent print of the original ready to go, right? Could it be possible that those were all in separate parts and the makers of the doc had to dig them up? Or that they required extensive restoration just to look decent and Lucas didn't want to do that for the entire reel when he had the 1993 video transfer already color corrected?
Because I understand Lucas' utter lazyness to not restore the original films, what doesn't make sense even for him would be to intentionally use a lower quality source if there was a better one ready to go, which was just sitting on the shelf in one piece.
The Empire of Dreams footage IMO is worse than the GOUT. It's much softer. You can see this if you compare the original crawl they show.
