For anyone who's interested, I'm going to be starting work on the chapter inserts this weekend. I'll start by sitting down with the movies with the chapter display on and a pad of paper for writing down what seems to be a good title. Then, once I've done that, I may attempt the design element myself, unless is interested in helping. Right now, I'm planning on a format that will print off on one side of a page but will fold over to have a front-and-back design. If anyone has any ideas, I'm definitely open to them; just PM me or let me know in the forums themselves. We're really seeing a lot of really nice cover designs, and I feel that chapter inserts would enhance the overall appearance of our Star Wars Trilogy sets. Also, for the bonus disc, I was thinking of having a sort of menu map instead of a chapter listing (for obvious reasons). The menus aren't really complex, but it would be interesting to have.
dude!!!
awesome idea... i was gonna make some up myself cause you cant find any with the orginal trilogy stops... its all SE out there...
plus i want all the stops which have been taken off the LD...
but i cant wait to see your work... keep us posted!
I sure will.

My anamorphic set actually has inserts but I don't like them very much. One problem is that each disc has over 70 chapter stops. That's a lot of information to fit on there. I like the idea of a multi-fold booklet type insert similar to those with the LOTR DVDs.

I noticed that Cerbero's TR47 covers are still somewhat in error. While the covers say Dolby Stereo Surround Sound, in reality the TR47 discs have 2-channel PCM (uncompressed Pulse Code Modulation) audio only.

But how can anyone want to watch the movie with matte lines around the ships, lame dead slum cities, hidden creatures. Same story, same acting, same action, better effects. I am hear because someone hear needs to defend Lucas and his superior versions. Why even discuss something if everyones gonna agree with you. Its more better to have individuels with different views. This site needs more people like me.
Dude,
I LOVE the Special Editions - I've never once slammed them and I WAY support the added scenes - Just watch the Droids cartoon or the animated portion of The Holiday Special - you'll see little flying probebots with the Stormtroopers THESE were added in the SE's SO yes I support the fact that GL said he WANTED to make them this way in the first place - HELL yea - I'm down with ANY new coming additions and seeing them restored with 21st century CG. HELL yea.
BUT
I also want to watch and enjoy the trilogy the way I saw it in the theaters IT's WAY more then just the moviw - I was there when they came out I recall watching them on TV for the first time or when my Dad bought the CED Video Disc of STAR WARS back 1982 then EVERY release afterwords. It has memories of sunday afternoons enjoying home popped pop-corn and Coke in a bottle.
There are SEVERAL reasons that he should release the originals on DVD some personal others just for the sake posterity.
I do intend on buying the new DVD's of the NEW SPECIAL EDITION EDITIONS (or what the heck are we gonna call them??) once they're out and on sale.
But until then - THIS forum is for the PRESERVATION of the Original Star Wars as it was released before the Special Editions is in not?

YES the TR47 set does have a 2-Channel PCM audio track - THIS IS true.
BUT If the PCM audio is a TRUE copy of the Definitive Collection Laserdiscs THEN the audio IS DOLBY STEREO that is encoded with Dolby Surround. (read the back of the either the Definitive, Faces or the Special Widescreen Edition)
'Dolby Stereo is the name given to the four-channel surround sound developed by Dolby Laboratories and introduced into movie theaters in the 70's. It employed a matrix encoding scheme called Dolby Surround which recorded four channels of information on two channels. The two channels are decoded into L, R, Center and Surround upon playback. The center channel is recorded identically on the left and right channels.'*Information is from this site SO the covers are correct

Howdy Scott!!
Interesting - I remember reading somewhere that the 1989 LD was the 70mm sound mix, but I can't remember where I read it. From what you say you're probably right though about it actually being the 35mm version. The 'Close the blast doors' line is not there, but the 'tractor beam is located...' line is there!
I do however have an article where it states that the 1995 faces edition LD (and the definitive collection) was remixed by Ben Burtt from the 70mm sound mix. It also states clearly that he added ina few sound effects. The whooshing of the asteroids, and the laserblast which explodes behind 3PO's head just before they get into the escape pod. Also the explosions of the cameras in the detention block scene has added sounds of glass being smashed. I think it was in the Topps Star Wars monthly from 1997... I'll have to take another look though.
I'm really excited by the prospect of the dual layer discs. Just think, we could have the original versions with three/four different sound tracks reflecting the changes between 35mm 70mm THX etc etc! "The Story of Star Wars" LP is also really useful in hearing different versions of lines and voices. Think this was taken from the mono versions of the film.
To Jimbo: Although I haven't posted here very often, I've been reading the forums for a long time. You seem to enjoy being argumentative and confrontational. Please read the title of this website - www.ORIGINALTRILOGY.com.... this site exists to preserve the original versions! This site is NOT called www.specialeditiontrilogy.com is it! I would appreciate it if you left those of us who love the originals alone! We're not baiting you... why bait us? As has been mentioned, there are plenty of other forums where you can express your love for the prequals or the special editions. But - like I said - perhaps you just get off on being argumentative. Yeah, discussions are great, but petty little childish argumets are not! Please think this over mate before posting again.

The multi-fold booklet is a really great idea, Obi-Wan! I don't know why I hadn't thought of it, since I just watched one of my LOTR DVDs the other day. After reading your suggestion, I have pretty much decided that trying to cram all 70-some chapter titles on one side of a two-sided insert (even if they were to be distributed in two columns), really wouldn't be the best choice. Unfortunately, I don't have the resources to make a multi-fold booklet like LOTR, but I'll try to come up with a booklet design that will incorporate the general style of the LOTR inserts. When they do get finished, they'll probably have a 'some assembly required' notice from me, since I'm working with very minimal resources.
Thanks for the suggestion!

Yeah but posting something with people who all disagree with you is boring and stupid. I like posting my ideas hear because very few agree with me. Its not to piss people off its to have a discussion with all points of view.

Jimbo: "Yeah but posting something with people who all disagree with you is boring and stupid."
Agreeing with people is stupid then is it Jimbo? - no it isn't! Nor is disagreeing as long as it is constructive! We ARE all here (except you) because we're united in a common goal - we want the original trilogy on DVD. If we can't get it, we'll do it ourselves because we're trying to preserve a valuable piece of film history both for ourselves, and for future generations to enjoy!
Jimbo: "I like posting my ideas hear because very few agree with me."
So from what you've just said you're posting here because basically you enjoy stiring it up. Tip: do it somewhere else please, unless you have something valuable to contribute.
Once again, THIS SITE IS FOR THE PRESERVATION OF THE ORIGINAL TRILOGY and all that that covers. All you seem to be interested in saying is variously, "George is God" "the Special Editions ARE better because I say so" "CGI is always better" "we should be happy with the new DVD's because they're Lucas's vision" etc etc because YOU KNOW it will wind people up. Sorry if that's not true, but that's how your posts read to me over the past 12 months I've been reading 'em!
Sorry folks, but I had to vent my spleen! It won't happen again or by God I'll watch the Phantom Menace on repeat for one day!!! (AGHHH!)

I don't believe George is God. He is just a great filmmaker. One of many great filmmakers that created such a great and epic saga. I have respect for his work. Plus I never agreed with Lucas not releasing the originals. I do agree that he has the right to. It would be nice to have both maybe just to get some people to shut up. I have signed the petition after hearing of that horrible Hayden head thing. Personally if tomarrow Lucas were to annouce he changed his mind. I would be happy. Still I am buying these DVDs the day they came out. They are selling fast showing that apparently the lack of the originals is not putting too many people off. Also I am not the only one hear with this view. I just stay the longest. Other people with my views have passed through a few times.

Yeah, the liner notes of the THX set say it was remastered by Ben Burtt and Gary Summers using the best of all three previous soundtracks. Perhaps the 70mm mix was used as the base for this. I'd be interested in hearing what that article says if you find it.
Another thing about the THX mix - after the Falcon enters the remains of Alderaan a TIE fighter gives two quick bursts and flies over the cockpit. A firing sound can be heard just before those two bursts on the THX version. This effect is only on the THX mix, the SE doesn't even have it.
Yes, the
Story of Star Wars album was made using the mono mix and some differences can be heard in it. The close the blast doors line is in there for example. The mono mix is very different from what we've come to know, although the differences can be subtle. I'm lucky enough to have a tape of the original film in mono, sans 'A New Hope' no less. It's invaluable.

Well, I've finalized the scene index for Empire Strikes Back (just watched A New Hope the other day, so I decided to save it for last). I have some Word templates for DVD booklet design, but I'm still finding a free way to edit a picture for the front of the booklet (this is what happens when a person with mediocre design skills and limited design resources takes on the world of designing all by himself

).
I'll try to have a booklet for Empire Strikes back soon, though.
