The struggle between heroes and villains and the influence of a higher force are the essence of mythology and resonate within all cultures, providing storytellers with a natural framework for spinning tales. In this extensive interview with Emmy-winning journalist Bill Moyers, director George Lucas reveals how the characters and themes in Star Wars were conceived and shaped by these timeless influences.

Lucas talks about how his quest with Star Wars to tell old myths in new ways was inspired by his mentor, Joseph Campbell. Illustrated with extended film clips from the Star Wars saga, including Episode I: The Phantom Menace, Moyers and Lucas discuss how the continuing battle between the forces of light and darkness is best waged when we believe in a force greater than ourselves. Ultimately, the director says, Star Wars is a search for personal transformation and the key to this journey is a deep faith and an appreciation for friendship, honor, and trust.
